demolished and replaced with a new steel-clad structure, complete with solar panels on the roof and
a modern kitchen/diner and utility room inside.
Retained windows have been restored and draught-proofed, insulation made of natural and
breathable materials has been introduced, lime plaster and renders have been returned – replacing
modern plasterboard and cement-based renders – while the gas boiler system has been changed to
an air source heat pump.
A trust spokesman said: “The whole of the house has, in effect, been rebalanced, returning it to an
equilibrium that will sustain and extend its useful life for further centuries, using principles and
techniques the original craftsmen who created it understood, combined with new cutting-edge
technologies.
“It is a marriage of the best of the past with the best of the present, acting as a beacon for a
sustainable future for our historic buildings.”
Jonathan Lloyd, chair of the trust, said: “This has been a long-term project and we are grateful for all
